If fishing and birding aren't for you, the flat trails with loop trails are perfect for hikes. A Hidden Gem of Nature in Northern Colorado

When one thinks of Colorado, one typically thinks of the majestic Rocky Mountains, skiing, and all the outdoor adventures you can have. But this also includes exploring some of the lesser-known gems that offer a unique outdoor experience. One such gem is the River Ponds Natural Area (RPNA) located in Fort Collins, CO. Here; visitors can explore more than 900 acres of natural beauty and wildlife. From hiking trails and fishing ponds to wildlife viewing and picnicking, there are plenty of activities to enjoy at River Ponds Natural Area. 

Location and Overview 

River Ponds Natural Area is located just off Highway near Fort Collins, Colorado. This sprawling natural area covers more than 900 acres along the Cache la Poudre River corridor, stretching from Shields and Timberline Road to north I-25 at Mulberry Street on the south end. It is bordered by agricultural fields on three sides and protected wetlands on another side. 

 Visitors who come to River Ponds Natural Area will find a variety of habitats ranging from grasslands to wetlands. The River Ponds area is filled with diverse plant life. It contains cottonwoods and willows, grasses, sedges, wildflowers, cattails, and other aquatic vegetation. In addition, numerous species of birds make their home here, including ducks, geese, shorebirds, and other waterfowl species. Other larger mammals call this area home as well, like beavers and whitetail deer, muskrats, and coyotes. All visitors should always keep an eye out for any wildlife sightings when visiting! 

Hiking Trails 

RPNA is a great place for hikers who want to explore more than 8 miles of trails. The hillsides offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The trails range from easy paved paths around wetland ponds to more challenging routes through wooded areas. The trails range from ½ mile up to 3 miles depending on what kind of hike you're interested in; there is something for everyone here! Each trail offers a unique view of nature with plenty of opportunities for spotting wildlife, so don't forget your binoculars or camera.

Fishing Opportunities 

If fishing is what you're after, then River Ponds Natural Area has covered you too. Several small ponds spread throughout the area offer excellent angling opportunities. For example, there is fly fishing with dry flies and spinning gear with lures or worms. Visitors should note that only catch-and-release fishing is allowed here due to strict conservation regulations. Do not worry; there are plenty of fish in these ponds, so you won't go hungry after your trip here.

Picnics & Wildlife Viewing 

River Ponds Natural Area also offers some great spots for picnicking. You can soak up some sunshine while taking in views across the scenic wetlands or grassy fields around you. . Many people like heading down around dusk when they have a better chance of seeing some deer grazing nearby or families of geese.  To visit a place with more history take Mulberry Street northwest up to the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery
